It was at Carnegie Hall in New York that Brad Mehldau played his “Three Pieces after Bach” for the first time. Three years after this creation, the jazzman is visiting the Philharmonie de Paris. In the Great Hall Pierre Boulez, Brad Mehldau reappropriates so the famous “well tempered Clavier”.

“Three Pieces after Bach” is not a jazzy cover of the “Well-Tempered Clavier”. Bach’s work acts as a stimulus, a starting point for Brad Mehldau to develop his own creative process. By alternating works of Bach and new works, the jazzman invites us to rediscover this emblematic partition.

a) The chairwoman could not be there tonight, so I chaired the meeting for the first time since I joined the board in 2012. (I moved it along a lot faster than we usually do - something about sticking to the agenda rather than a lot of chatting about other stuff.)

b) The election results are official: I lost by two votes. Next month I open the meeting and sit on the board long enough for the new member to be sworn in for my seat, then I’m off the board.

The other board members don’t actually think I will be off the board very long, as they expect him to absent the seat shortly after being sworn in. Three unexcused absences in a row and an elected position in this state is considered abandoned by the office holder and the board can appoint a replacement. (I’m not sure how to think about that.)

Well, after tonight’s meeting when that discussion went down, I did say I would be rather uncomfortable taking a seat that I was voted out of.

It’s a bit different than in 2012: In that, I’d lived in town about a year when a long-serving board member died in office, so I stepped up and said, sure, I’ll do it. When the board weighed the appointments, they chose me as being “the least divisive candidate” because I was not involved in the water project a few years ago that had half the town threatening the other half.

(When we first moved here, I wondered why we had an armed sheriff’s deputy at every board meeting … that continued until the 2014 election. The water project was the reason, as there had been death threats against board members, vandalism, all kinds of fun stuff. The FBI even got involved.)

Might get to 53, might only be 51, depending on what happens in Florida and Mississippi (I’m hoping against hope that the public hanging comment gives us something similar to Roy Moore’s end). Realistically, Dems only have to convince 2-4 Republicans that someone is unqualified (assuming they hold the caucus)

My wife is now organising a new planning commission; he’d asked to be on it. The board appointed him to the commission, then he filed for election. Since he won, he has to leave the planning commission. (My wife has another person in her back pocket already for the position.)

My wife was looking over the VA Disability site trying to find out what would happen if the village starts to pay me to be the water operator (would it affect my disability compensation).

She hasn’t figured that out yet, but ran into a different issue: I’ve been underpaid ever since we were married (in 2007).

It turns out if you have a spouse you receive a modest stipend of about $200 more. (There is also one for each child or dependent parent.)

That means tomorrow I will be on the telephone to the Disabled American Veterans (since they are my representatives for claims), and the benefits office at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center.

We also have to go to Cheyenne on Wednesday.

My wife has the forms; now we have to fill in such things as previous marriages. That will be tomorrow’s job.

a) The chairwoman could not be there tonight, so I chaired the meeting for the first time since I joined the board in 2012. (I moved it along a lot faster than we usually do - something about sticking to the agenda rather than a lot of chatting about other stuff.)

b) The election results are official: I lost by two votes. Next month I open the meeting and sit on the board long enough for the new member to be sworn in for my seat, then I’m off the board.

The other board members don’t actually think I will be off the board very long, as they expect him to absent the seat shortly after being sworn in. Three unexcused absences in a row and an elected position in this state is considered abandoned by the office holder and the board can appoint a replacement. (I’m not sure how to think about that.)

As for whether you decide to take the seat if the Nazi fucks up…you aren’t paid for anything in this position, correct? Starting in January, village board pays $100 a month ($125 for the chair) if you show up for the meeting. Our village government will remain the lowest paid of any in the state though.

I haven’t needed any kind of service as of yet. Took delivery of my Model 3 in early September and thankfully no glaring issues with paint/build quality. Really enjoying the car.

I see this one mobile service guy driving around once in awhile. Jumped out of my car at a stop light one time when we got stuck together and got his business card.

Paying $15-20 extra for electricity is way better than $300 a month for gas.

And I sure don’t mind the software updates that add/improve features.

He visited the SEMA convention recently, and met some guys who took a ‘49 Mercury and Tesla-fied it.

Well, we’ve chalked up three deer with our Smart now, along with road trips to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Chicago, Sacramento, two to Regina (one of which included a huge trip around Lake Superior and Huron), and the mondo drive to Yukon and the Alaska Panhandle this summer.

The rest of the time we just sit at home. Despite my low income we can take such trips because a) cheap car to drive and b) we don’t spend diddly when we’re home.

The next scheduled trip is during Memorial Day to Chicopee, Mass., followed by a trip through the Maritime Provinces. The mayor of Chicopee sent me an E-mail asking if I would come to the Memorial Day parade and remembrance (since my father was from Chicopee Falls). I agreed to that, so we’re off to Massachusetts in May. (Being off the village board means I don’t have to prepare a bunch of government work in advance of the trip at least, other than water operator stuff.)

Today, Veterans Day 2018, the President of the United States stayed in the White House. He did not go to Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath. He did nothing to commemorate Veterans Day. The excuse was a forecast of rain. This makes no sense.

Two days ago, in France, Trump cancelled a trip to the Aisne Marne American military cemetery near Bellau Wood, about 50 miles outside Paris, with the excuse that Marine One has trouble flying in the rain. That’s not a great excuse, but it’s just barely plausible enough to get away with. And Trump took immediate blowback for skipping that ceremony. But Arlington is two miles from the White House, and it wasn’t even raining. Rain was forecast for later. This is political malpractice, at best. Every President commemorates Veterans Day. It’s easy. It costs you nothing. It looks awful if you skip it, let alone with combat troops in the field. And it’s the right thing to do. (This is especially weird when Trump makes such a point of glorifying, or even fetishizing, the military.)

I don’t believe this was about the rain.

The White House press corps was notified at 10 am that the President would have no more public events or movements for the day. So Trump’s day ended early. Why?

Another take on why Whitaker is put in as AG: To advance Christianity in government and strip the rights of non-Christians.

New acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said in 2014 that judges without a New Testament “biblical view of justice,” should not serve on the federal bench and suggested that he would block the appointment of non-Christian judges if given the chance.

While Whitaker singled out atheists in particular as being unfit to serve, his comments also extended to Jewish and Muslim Americans.

In 2014, Whitaker was running for the Republican Senate nomination in Iowa and participated in a forum hosted by the religious-right group The Family Leader. The forum’s leader, Bob Vander Plaats, outlined the themes of the event in his opening remarks. “We believe God has three institutions: It would be the church, the family, and government,” he said. The Republican nominees were then asked a series of questions about their religious values, including their views on federal judgeships.

“If you get to the United States Senate and you have the majority, you can block President Obama’s judges,” said moderator Erick Erickson, a conservative blogger. “But most Americans would say you need to have a real reason to block those judges other than just they’re liberal. How do you set the criteria that you will use to block those judges?”

Whittaker’s two competitors, Sam Clovis and Joni Ernst, said that they would use faith-based criteria and make sure they acknowledged “natural law.”

On the issue of Natural Law, I would note the interpretation of that comes from theologians. Thus, Natural Law means whatever the particular theologian propounding it means.

You can bet that fundamentalist and conservative Catholic theologians, preachers, and their followers think that a moderate Christian is just as much a heretic as an atheist or Muslim.

Consider how hard the Evangelicals and Catholics went for Trump over the demonstrably devout but moderate Methodist Hillary Clinton. All sorts of rhetoric from the right painted her as a demon second only to Obama (also a devout but moderate Christian).

Though Trump doesn’t seem to display any of the attitudes one might deem Christian words and deeds, through him they see a path to power. They won’t stop at atheists, Muslims, and Jews.

Just as in conservatism, deviation in fundamentalist religion is not acceptable. Groups such as Episcopalians, Presbyterians, and other churches are seen as following heretical doctrines. Since the goal of Dominionism is domination of all aspects of society, they will be punished for their heresy as well (they just won’t be first in line).

What fundamentalists have always wanted is a new Dark Age.

I think at most it will be a plus 2 for the R’s in the Senate yes which considering how many red state seats the Dems had to defend, that’s pretty incredible. If there had been more blue states up, the R’s would have lost the Senate for sure IMO. And just like that, 2020’s map is very tough for Republicans since they have the same problem that many red state Dems like Donnelly, Heitcamp, Manchin, McCaskill, and others faced.

The governor’s win last year in VA was awesome but cutting into the GOP lead in the state legislature was even better. And next year we have a chance to flip the majority to the Dems. My state senator and delegate are right wing crazies so you can bet I’m going to be on the campaign volunteers for both Dems who run against them. I even already know the likely Dem running against Dave LaRock since we met when I was a Perriello volunteer. Very savvy lady who ran for the nomination last time but lost a tight race. Don’t know the guy who’s the frontrunner to run against Dick Black but he’s apparently a vet with a lot of energy who will take on that Assad loving homophobic sexist asshole.

My CD seat hadn’t had a Dem in it since the Carter years. One of the things that the two delegates who introduced Jen Wexton last week pointed out was that there have been people and I count myself among them that have been working to flip this district for years. I did it when Frank Wolf was as safe as one could be and this was a reliable Republican district even for Republican presidential canddiates.

KANAWHA COUNTY, w.va. (WSAZ) — UPDATE 11/13/18 @ 10:53 a.m.
Officials are no longer calling the hundreds of ballots that fell through the cracks in Kanawha County a machine error, but a human error.

More than 1,700 votes in Kanawha went uncounted on Election Day, leading to questions in some tight races. The affected precincts were in the Elkview, Clendenin, and Pinch areas as well as Kanawha City.

Originally, the clerk’s office said it was due to machine error — an error they discovered when the machines and hand-written number of voters did not match up.

A canvass is underway Tuesday. Officials are sorting through paperwork and making sure all votes are correctly tabulated.

During that process, officials discovered at least two USB flash drives that contained the ballots for multiple precincts, but were never plugged into a computer for tabulation. That would have been a duty at the clerk’s office.

Officials chose random precincts to canvass. There could be more, but they started with Holz Elementary, Piedmont Elementary, Rock Lake Presbyterian Church, Point Harmony Elementary, Sissonville’s Loftis Fire Station, and Shoals Elementary.

IIRC, under AZ law, if Kyl leaves for any reason, whoever the Gov appoints won’t have to run - in a confirmatory election - until 2020 (and again in 2022, when the late Sen. McCain’s term expires). So yes, McSally could still end up in Washington. And if she’s appointed before the 116th Congress gets sworn in on 1/3 (?), she would be Arizona’s senior Senator (FWIW).

I’d honestly be shocked if it was high as 60%. But yes you do have to be fairly conservative to win state wide in Arizona. And I wouldn’t call Sinema a DINO in any case given that she strongly supports LGBT rights, is pro choice, pro gun control. She rubbed me the wrong way big time with her agreement with Trump sending troops to the border but she’s a moderate Dem not a DINO. And I’m tired of progressives acting like it’s all black and white especially as they ignore the less than progressive stances that those they like i.e. Bernie’s record on immigration and guns which are awful and shitting on other people.

I’ve never had it but Sorghum has been around for centuries. I’m pretty sure that’s wine and not a distilled spirit anyhow. The others in the top 10 don’t surprise me either. Germany, yeah we think and rightfully of it being a beer country but they’ve had a strong wine industry for some time.

I wonder if they’re producing wine that’s then used to mix and create bottled products.

In my area there’s a rash of vineyards (because it’s way of taking a little rural land and turning it into a picturesque locale) and they all send off what they press to be blended into something palatable. Now I’m wondering where the people they hire to do the blending get all their different wines to work with.

Since the fucking Romans, I live on the Middle Rhine and they have been cultivating the slopes here for 2,000 years.

The industry suffered from a bad image as they were overproducing and selling cheap crappy wines for export (remember Blue Nun, Liebrauenmilch, Black Tower or Schwarze Katze? All crappy wine made up of grapes that nobody could get rid of)

The industry has started stressing quality over quantity lately and doing just fine, especially now that climate change allows them to grow varieties of grapes (pinot, sylvaner, etc.) that never thrived here before.

We have a couple of wineries in the Finger Lakes that are cultivating some of those Georgian varietials. Check out Dr. Franks and McGregor (or don’t, because I would buy up their stocks instead).

The grapes: Rkatsiteli, Saperavi & Sereksiya Charni. I consider the McGregor Black Russian to be among the best wines in the Finger Lakes hands down. The Dr. Franks Rkatsiteli is right behind it…

I’d honestly be shocked if it was high as 60%. But yes you do have to be fairly conservative to win state wide in Arizona. We need a set of principles that sets us apart from Republicans obviously but we need to understand what gets someone elected here in VA or your state or Arizona is totally different. And I wouldn’t call Sinema a DINO in any case given that she strongly supports LGBT rights, is pro choice, pro gun control. She rubbed me the wrong way big time with her agreement with Trump sending troops to the border but she’s a moderate Dem not a DINO. And I’m tired of progressives acting like it’s all black and white especially as they ignore the less than progressive stances that those they like i.e. Bernie’s record on immigration and guns which are awful and shitting on other people.

I’d also be shocked if it’s that high. But even if it is, what matters most is what issues she broke with the party on.

Unsurprising, assuming the climate and terroir of Upstate NY are remotely similar to Georgia: Georgian wines have been cultivated since forever: reputedly, their brandies were especially treasured in pre-Revolutionary Russia: being considered the equivalent of the best French cognacs.

Sorghum would result in a distilled spirit, not wine AFAIK. Even what’s known as sorghum wine is actually a distilled spirit.

Germany has a wine culture going back centuries; Riesling and Gewurztraminer, among the top varietals. Rhine/Rhone valley wines are often exceptional.

I’m a German wine girl, myself. All of ‘em.
