An Extraordinary Live Performance by Pianist Brad Mehldau: “Three Pieces After Bach” [VIDEO]

Music • Views: 37,185

YouTube

It was at Carnegie Hall in New York that Brad Mehldau played his “Three Pieces after Bach” for the first time. Three years after this creation, the jazzman is visiting the Philharmonie de Paris. In the Great Hall Pierre Boulez, Brad Mehldau reappropriates so the famous “well tempered Clavier”.

“Three Pieces after Bach” is not a jazzy cover of the “Well-Tempered Clavier”. Bach’s work acts as a stimulus, a starting point for Brad Mehldau to develop his own creative process. By alternating works of Bach and new works, the jazzman invites us to rediscover this emblematic partition.

Juanita Jean on what the Dems need to do when they get control:

I’m over here in the peanut gallery and I know that. But I’m wondering if I’m alone on this one issue.

I am all for the Democratic House investigating Trump. Good idea. Needs doing.

But first, above all, we have got to address health care. We have got to send a health care bill (and that includes prescription drug prices) to the senate every damn day until they finally give in or don’t have any answers left. That has to be first and that has to be constant. We’ve got to personalize it. We have to run ads on teevee. We need billboards that say insurance and drug companies are ripping you off, and dammit, for profit hospitals ain’t helping the situation any at all.

Democrats were elected to get something done. If we spend the next two years doing nothing but fighting Trump and then exchange him for something even worse, then shame on us in 2020.

This fucking asshole.

It shows one thing very clearly. Trump is prepared to do anything to get a win and maintain power.

And I think that goes to the whole Russian connection. He was prepared to try to win and he would do anything to get that win and get the power…including taking help from the Russians.

I no longer buy into the story that Trump didn’t think he would win and maybe didn’t want to win.

If that were the case he would be way more humbled by actually winning. The enormity would have made him want to learn how to do the job just by the surprise of it all.

No, crook all the way and the stolen win made him arrogant and feeling like he could do anything.

Back from the village board meeting.

a) The chairwoman could not be there tonight, so I chaired the meeting for the first time since I joined the board in 2012. (I moved it along a lot faster than we usually do - something about sticking to the agenda rather than a lot of chatting about other stuff.)

b) The election results are official: I lost by two votes. Next month I open the meeting and sit on the board long enough for the new member to be sworn in for my seat, then I’m off the board.

The other board members don’t actually think I will be off the board very long, as they expect him to absent the seat shortly after being sworn in. Three unexcused absences in a row and an elected position in this state is considered abandoned by the office holder and the board can appoint a replacement. (I’m not sure how to think about that.)

Uh oh. Folks who go to a certain Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf shop don’t like Jerky Wohl!

Conservative activist and always-online Twitter pundit Jacob Wohl has been stirring up controversy on social media for some time, but now a ton of folks are raking him over the coals for his assertion that a Brentwood location of Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf constitutes a “hipster coffee shop.” The Los Angeles-based company has more than 1,000 locations in over two dozen countries, and was acquired by a private equity firm in 2013.

The suit-wearing 20-year-old was quickly dragged in his mentions for any number of offenses, among them the notion that Brentwood itself was in any way “hipster,” let alone Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. As a term, “hipster” is usually reserved (often with a heavy dose of snark) as a label for expensive millennial brands with a small corporate footprint, particularly in “cool” neighborhoods filled with young artists and other creative types.

It’s not my decision, but if it were I refuse and say thanks but no thanks. Then I would tell them I would be uncomfortable taking the seat since I was not elected to it and would feel like I don’t have the confidence of the townspeople.

In other words…a pleasant fuck you for not voting for me in the first place.

Well, after tonight’s meeting when that discussion went down, I did say I would be rather uncomfortable taking a seat that I was voted out of.

It’s a bit different than in 2012: In that, I’d lived in town about a year when a long-serving board member died in office, so I stepped up and said, sure, I’ll do it. When the board weighed the appointments, they chose me as being “the least divisive candidate” because I was not involved in the water project a few years ago that had half the town threatening the other half.

(When we first moved here, I wondered why we had an armed sheriff’s deputy at every board meeting … that continued until the 2014 election. The water project was the reason, as there had been death threats against board members, vandalism, all kinds of fun stuff. The FBI even got involved.)

Midterms are all but over. Let’s start putting criminals behind bars. My “smile to appease the wingnuts present” on Thanksgiving will change to a “smile because the fucking criminal syndicate running our country is finally getting its due”.

Also gravy. Last year our hosts used something from a jar. We told them we won’t return unless they allow us to make real gravy this time.

This is too funny in a dark way. Nicholas Cruz, the Parkland shooter registered to vote……as a Republican. I feel awful for Mr. Pollack that he lost his daughter obviously but he really should have read what Cruz registered as before going on Fox and Friends and spreading bullshit.

Conservatism is a religion. Note in the article that he and the FOX hosts insist that no one should be allowed to vote from jail (the fact the alleged shooter has not been tried or convicted be damned).

Maybe Democratic registrars went into the jail (since Democrats were pushing to register those eligible). They are prohibited from throwing out registration cards if a person wants to register with a different party.

Note also the father was spewing lies about Democrats trying to steal the election in Broward.

It would appear, like many religious faiths, that his feelings trump the truth (or his family).

That person would have to be vetted by the Senate first. Stephen Miller or Steve King might be a bit too far even for Mitch McConnell.

Chemtrail Kelli Ward might work though, or Michele Bachman. Cliven Bundy on speed dial.

The Senate majority is basically the same they have these last few weeks. Might get to 53, might only be 51, depending on what happens in Florida and Mississippi (I’m hoping against hope that the public hanging comment gives us something similar to Roy Moore’s end). Realistically, Dems only have to convince 2-4 Republicans that someone is unqualified (assuming they hold the caucus)

Well, maybe. That would assume he chose to abandon the board. (That happened with a different person a couple years ago.) On the other hand, this guy abandoned the planning commission before we moved here.

My wife is now organising a new planning commission; he’d asked to be on it. The board appointed him to the commission, then he filed for election. Since he won, he has to leave the planning commission. (My wife has another person in her back pocket already for the position.)

——

KEWL BEANZ

My wife was looking over the VA Disability site trying to find out what would happen if the village starts to pay me to be the water operator (would it affect my disability compensation).

She hasn’t figured that out yet, but ran into a different issue: I’ve been underpaid ever since we were married (in 2007).

It turns out if you have a spouse you receive a modest stipend of about $200 more. (There is also one for each child or dependent parent.)

That means tomorrow I will be on the telephone to the Disabled American Veterans (since they are my representatives for claims), and the benefits office at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center.

We also have to go to Cheyenne on Wednesday.

My wife has the forms; now we have to fill in such things as previous marriages. That will be tomorrow’s job.

It’s not over yet:

( 444 of 444 ) precincts partially
reporting as of November 12, 2018, 5:46 p.m.

California is notoriously slow at counting mail in and provisional ballots, in part because all ballots post marked by election day and arriving by three days after the election must be counted and the deadline for reporting final results isn’t until a month after the election. We also generate a ton of absentee ballots because we don’t need to have an excuse for requesting permanent absentee status.

Good for you for moving the meeting along rapidly. I never understood the need to drag them out with a bunch of useless chit chat.

As for whether you decide to take the seat if the Nazi fucks up…you aren’t paid for anything in this position, correct? If that’s the case, I think the town needs a lesson in not taking someone for granted who will do the job and do it well, even though he gets nothing for it except for knowing that he is doing good for the community. Starting in January, village board pays $100 a month ($125 for the chair) if you show up for the meeting. Our village government will remain the lowest paid of any in the state though.

So depending on how he does, they might have the benefit of paying for him to do poorly.

Initially, the “Blue Wave” was just meant to mean the Dems make enough modest gains to take back the House.

Over time, Pundits tried to make the Blue Wave into the Dems winning every race and storming the WH to throw Trump out on his ass.

Now that the elections have proven the Dems exceeded their initial hopes, but failed to reach their 1 in a million chance to win it all, pundits are saying how the Blue Wave failed.

The lesson: Pundits are full of shit

Associate of close Trump adviser expects to be indicted by Mueller

An associate of Roger Stone, a longtime ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, expects to be indicted by the U.S. special counsel probing Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, he said on Monday.

Jerome Corsi, a right-wing commentator, said in a livestream posted to YouTube he expected to be criminally charged after two months of cooperation with federal authorities.

“I fully anticipate that in the next few days I will be indicted by Mueller for some form or other of giving false information to the special counsel or … (however) they want to do the indictment. But I’m going to be criminally charged,” Corsi said in the video.

Corsi’s attorney declined to comment, and Corsi did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Maureen Dowd weighing in with a load of bull:

Even for Washington, the capital of do-overs and the soulless swamp where horrendous mistakes never prevent you from cashing in and getting another security clearance, this is a repellent spectacle. War criminals-turned-liberal heroes are festooned with book and TV contracts, podcasts and op-ed perches.

Those who sold us the “cakewalk” Iraq war and the outrageously unprepared Sarah Palin and torture as “enhanced interrogation,” those who left the Middle East shattered with a cascading refugee crisis and a rising ISIS, and those who midwifed the birth of the Tea Party are washing away their sins in a basin of Trump hate.

The very same Republicans who eroded America’s moral authority in the 2000s are, staggeringly, being treated as the new guardians of America’s moral authority.

They bellow that Trump is a blight on democracy. But where were these patriots when the Bush administration was deceiving us with a cooked-up war in Iraq?

Michelle Obama has written in her memoir that she will never forgive Trump for pushing the birther movement. Yet the Pygmalions of Palin, who backed Trump on the birther filth, are now among the most celebrated voices in Michelle’s party.

Which Republicans who sold us the Iraq War are suddenly “liberal heroes?” And deceiving us with a cooked-up war? That would be Judith Miller, who worked for your newspaper.

And since when are “birthers” the most celebrated voices in our party? What the hell is Dowd drinking? Draino?

I’d like an electric car … but the distances here are simply too great for the battery technology, and the cost of one is more than my house is worth.

$300 a month for gas seems awfully high … I guess I’m used to my Smart sipping gasoline through a pipette.

Dear Lindsey: Not Even Trump Gives a Shit What You Think about the Whitaker Appointment (goes to emptywheel, more at the link):

Ms. Wheeler weighs in on Lindsay Graham appearing on Face the Nation to defend Trump’s choice of Whitaker as Acting Attorney General. She wasn’t impressed with Graham’s performance, summing up:

Having Lindsey’s seal of approval might make it easier for Whitaker to last out the two months or so until Democrats take the House. But that will have zero role in whether Whitaker blows up the Constitution.

Lindsey (and CBS) think he matters here. That’s quaint.

My ex drove a Smart before she totaled it in an accident in a snowstorm, but she was able to walk away from it although the safety cell was bent.

I recall being out once with my daughter and seeing a sign for Trier, some 60 miles away, I thought, heck, that is less than a gallon of gasoline, (or rather diesel, which is cheaper than gasoline in Germany) and so we set off to visit the home town of Karl Marx with its 2,000-year-old Roman ruins.

Well, we’ve chalked up three deer with our Smart now, along with road trips to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Chicago, Sacramento, two to Regina (one of which included a huge trip around Lake Superior and Huron), and the mondo drive to Yukon and the Alaska Panhandle this summer.

The rest of the time we just sit at home. Despite my low income we can take such trips because a) cheap car to drive and b) we don’t spend diddly when we’re home.

The next scheduled trip is during Memorial Day to Chicopee, Mass., followed by a trip through the Maritime Provinces. The mayor of Chicopee sent me an E-mail asking if I would come to the Memorial Day parade and remembrance (since my father was from Chicopee Falls). I agreed to that, so we’re off to Massachusetts in May. (Being off the village board means I don’t have to prepare a bunch of government work in advance of the trip at least, other than water operator stuff.)

Via the Doctor Cleveland blog, more at the link:

Today, Veterans Day 2018, the President of the United States stayed in the White House. He did not go to Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath. He did nothing to commemorate Veterans Day. The excuse was a forecast of rain. This makes no sense.

Two days ago, in France, Trump cancelled a trip to the Aisne Marne American military cemetery near Bellau Wood, about 50 miles outside Paris, with the excuse that Marine One has trouble flying in the rain. That’s not a great excuse, but it’s just barely plausible enough to get away with. And Trump took immediate blowback for skipping that ceremony. But Arlington is two miles from the White House, and it wasn’t even raining. Rain was forecast for later. This is political malpractice, at best. Every President commemorates Veterans Day. It’s easy. It costs you nothing. It looks awful if you skip it, let alone with combat troops in the field. And it’s the right thing to do. (This is especially weird when Trump makes such a point of glorifying, or even fetishizing, the military.)

I don’t believe this was about the rain.

The White House press corps was notified at 10 am that the President would have no more public events or movements for the day. So Trump’s day ended early. Why?

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker Once Said Jews, Muslims and Atheists Should Not Be Federal Judges (Newsweek)

Another take on why Whitaker is put in as AG: To advance Christianity in government and strip the rights of non-Christians.

New acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said in 2014 that judges without a New Testament “biblical view of justice,” should not serve on the federal bench and suggested that he would block the appointment of non-Christian judges if given the chance.

While Whitaker singled out atheists in particular as being unfit to serve, his comments also extended to Jewish and Muslim Americans.

In 2014, Whitaker was running for the Republican Senate nomination in Iowa and participated in a forum hosted by the religious-right group The Family Leader. The forum’s leader, Bob Vander Plaats, outlined the themes of the event in his opening remarks. “We believe God has three institutions: It would be the church, the family, and government,” he said. The Republican nominees were then asked a series of questions about their religious values, including their views on federal judgeships.

“If you get to the United States Senate and you have the majority, you can block President Obama’s judges,” said moderator Erick Erickson, a conservative blogger. “But most Americans would say you need to have a real reason to block those judges other than just they’re liberal. How do you set the criteria that you will use to block those judges?”

Whittaker’s two competitors, Sam Clovis and Joni Ernst, said that they would use faith-based criteria and make sure they acknowledged “natural law.”

“Natural law” is a Catholic proposition that says the binding objective morals of God’s laws are universal and can be deduced with human reason. Likewise, that proposition states that such God-given natural law should be imposed on governance and society.

On the issue of Natural Law, I would note the interpretation of that comes from theologians. Thus, Natural Law means whatever the particular theologian propounding it means.

You can bet that fundamentalist and conservative Catholic theologians, preachers, and their followers think that a moderate Christian is just as much a heretic as an atheist or Muslim.

Consider how hard the Evangelicals and Catholics went for Trump over the demonstrably devout but moderate Methodist Hillary Clinton. All sorts of rhetoric from the right painted her as a demon second only to Obama (also a devout but moderate Christian).

Though Trump doesn’t seem to display any of the attitudes one might deem Christian words and deeds, through him they see a path to power. They won’t stop at atheists, Muslims, and Jews.

Just as in conservatism, deviation in fundamentalist religion is not acceptable. Groups such as Episcopalians, Presbyterians, and other churches are seen as following heretical doctrines. Since the goal of Dominionism is domination of all aspects of society, they will be punished for their heresy as well (they just won’t be first in line).

What fundamentalists have always wanted is a new Dark Age.

Also: wine tariffs??
OK: I won’t claim any more expertise on the international wine trade than can be found at the bottom of a bottle of decent Bordeaux - BUT:
Does the Idiot really think that EU tariffs are a reason for lagging US exports of wine? To France? SRSLY? That France, Spain and Italy (EU) produce so much wine every year that they need supports to deal with oversupply might have something to do with it? That the production/marketing costs of EU/US wineries make exports of pretty much anything except top-of-the-line “boutique” vintages noncompetitive due to structural economies? And matters of taste: does he really think he’s going to help our balance of trade by getting Gallo to sell tons of Hearty Burgundy IN Burgundy??

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker Once Said Jews, Muslims and Atheists Should Not Be Federal Judges (Newsweek)

Another take on why Whitaker is put in as AG: To advance Christianity in government and strip the rights of non-Christians.

“Natural law” is a Catholic proposition that says the binding objective morals of God’s laws are universal and can be deduced with human reason. Likewise, that proposition states that such God-given natural law should be imposed on governance and society.

I fully admit I dropped away from the Catholic Church back in the mid-70s, but I did attend 12 years of Catholic school and have always been politically aware.

I have never heard of natural law explained it should be imposed on governance and society.

Sure, they have pushed hard on abortion issues which I think they should keep out of politics and within their church as in their people should practice their teachings. But you make it sound like Catholics want to influence all law and I just don’t think that is so.

What I’ve read on natural law, and It’s been a while, is that we all have certain rights by virtue of being human, and that those rights can be understood via the application of reason. Natural law is, arguably, the basis of the concept of universal human rights. So of course, the Trump administration would be opposes

I think at most it will be a plus 2 for the R’s in the Senate yes which considering how many red state seats the Dems had to defend, that’s pretty incredible. If there had been more blue states up, the R’s would have lost the Senate for sure IMO. And just like that, 2020’s map is very tough for Republicans since they have the same problem that many red state Dems like Donnelly, Heitcamp, Manchin, McCaskill, and others faced.

I always go back to the quote from this interview:

“We spent nearly $100 million in the course of the campaign with our operation based in San Antonio, and a ton of that money was spent in San Antonio on campaign-related employment, thousands of hotel rooms, all kinds of economic activity,” Parscale said. “Many of the employees that worked on the campaign have spun off their own enterprises, using the campaign as a catalyst to better success.”

two comments on lying and liars:

- people usually lie because they want something and they dont think the truth would get it for them

- a man who tells lies, merely hides the truth. But a man who tells half-lies has forgotten where he put it.

Yeah I think that’s a good point.

The governor’s win last year in VA was awesome but cutting into the GOP lead in the state legislature was even better. And next year we have a chance to flip the majority to the Dems. My state senator and delegate are right wing crazies so you can bet I’m going to be on the campaign volunteers for both Dems who run against them. I even already know the likely Dem running against Dave LaRock since we met when I was a Perriello volunteer. Very savvy lady who ran for the nomination last time but lost a tight race. Don’t know the guy who’s the frontrunner to run against Dick Black but he’s apparently a vet with a lot of energy who will take on that Assad loving homophobic sexist asshole.

re: #297 Sir John Barron

Yeah I think that’s a good point.

For example, we won a House seat in Kansas, but that seat had been Dem for a period of time not too long ago (recognizing these districts differ slightly or greatly depending on redistricting from what existed in the 90’s).

My CD seat hadn’t had a Dem in it since the Carter years. One of the things that the two delegates who introduced Jen Wexton last week pointed out was that there have been people and I count myself among them that have been working to flip this district for years. I did it when Frank Wolf was as safe as one could be and this was a reliable Republican district even for Republican presidential canddiates.

I think he said Donnie lost 1/3rd of the GOP gains that were made under the 8 years of Obama.

All in all it was a pretty good outcome, considering that I half expected the GOP to maintain control of the House, given the gerrymandering and the efforts made to suppress the vote in Dem areas (voter ID, polling places, etc).

I presume it’d go straight to the SCOTUS, wouldn’t it?

Babe didn’t actually. Speaking of baseball players and war though, a friend of mine was telling me that his great grandfather served with a Hall of Famer. Funnily enough, one of my great grandfathers was apparently friends with a Hall of Famer. And these aren’t just any Hall of Famers, they’re legends, Honus Wagner in my case.

In West Virginia:

KANAWHA COUNTY, w.va. (WSAZ) — UPDATE 11/13/18 @ 10:53 a.m.
Officials are no longer calling the hundreds of ballots that fell through the cracks in Kanawha County a machine error, but a human error.

More than 1,700 votes in Kanawha went uncounted on Election Day, leading to questions in some tight races. The affected precincts were in the Elkview, Clendenin, and Pinch areas as well as Kanawha City.

Originally, the clerk’s office said it was due to machine error — an error they discovered when the machines and hand-written number of voters did not match up.

A canvass is underway Tuesday. Officials are sorting through paperwork and making sure all votes are correctly tabulated.

During that process, officials discovered at least two USB flash drives that contained the ballots for multiple precincts, but were never plugged into a computer for tabulation. That would have been a duty at the clerk’s office.

Officials chose random precincts to canvass. There could be more, but they started with Holz Elementary, Piedmont Elementary, Rock Lake Presbyterian Church, Point Harmony Elementary, Sissonville’s Loftis Fire Station, and Shoals Elementary.

IIRC, under AZ law, if Kyl leaves for any reason, whoever the Gov appoints won’t have to run - in a confirmatory election - until 2020 (and again in 2022, when the late Sen. McCain’s term expires). So yes, McSally could still end up in Washington. And if she’s appointed before the 116th Congress gets sworn in on 1/3 (?), she would be Arizona’s senior Senator (FWIW).

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Looks like things are about to heat up on the Mueller watch.

Corsi is expecting to get indicted for lying to investigators after his negotiations for a plea deal crapped out. That’s the string of evidence likely involving Wikileaks to Roger Stone to Corsi to Trumpworld.

Then there’s Junior… and Kushner…

But you know what, Trump has decided to take on the likely indictments by again trying to deflect attention by looking to dump DHS Nielsen and floating possibility that Kelly is gone too.

Yeah, we know exactly what he’s doing, and it isn’t going to work.

Trumpworld is a cesspool and it’s circling of the drain is only going to accelerate further as Mueller is no longer constrained by the DOJ rules around actions that might affect the election (doing what Comey refused to do, for the record).

See, that’s the thing. Thanks to (among other factors) reality TV and “durr hurr, damn the actual consequences, this is a win for _____” punditry, I don’t believe losing candidates have any sort of realistic presidential aspirations.

The Cult of Win so prevalent in America now means that anyone who prevails is seen as somehow redeemed or strengthened, no matter how grotesque they were before. Conversely, a good person who loses (e.g. Beto) eventually becomes best-known as just that - loser :/

As I said before, I can’t think of a single losing candidate in recent history who went on to bigger, better things (last I think was George HW Bush). Mitt Romney is sort of a wash, but then again, he did at least win one high-profile race in the past (MA Gov).

You’re never going to see someone who was nominated by their party be their party’s nominee again. That’s why Romney won’t primary Trump or replace him or why HRC and Kerry should just enjoy retirement and let some other people run in 2020. The Dems honestly really don’t do the next man thing up that the R’s did until Trump. HRC and Gore were sort of the exception to that but Kerry, Obama, and Bill definitely weren’t. Can argue that Mondale was in ‘84 though.

When will Bill Nelson concede in Florida? The characters running Broward and Palm Beach voting will not be able to “find” enough votes, too much spotlight on them now!

My favorite Obama tweets were the ones with him taunting GOP Senate candidates a week after the election before the results were final.

I always like how they call Stormy a whore for sleeping with him and being a porn star. Well who’s the one who fucked her. And yeah I know that’s their sexism. It’s just so fucking obvious to anyone and it’s a shame that no one calls these “moral leaders” that support Trump out for the frauds they are. I’m seeing that. Would a former Republican appeal to the Dem base though? If he were to run though, it would seem to me that Cindy and the kids would support him since he’s close to the McCain family from what I see and he actually supported HRC. I don’t know Arizona’s Dems though. I also know that we have to be practical with this seat too.

Your comment reminded me I saw a comment at another forum from a dedicated left leaning liberal that I know from Arizona. He said that Kyrsten Sinema is a DINO (Democrat in name only). I have seen other comments similar. So, I am guessing that to win a seat in Arizona as a Democrat you have to be fairly conservative politically.

I think I saw where she backed Trump 60% of the time as a House Rep.

Looks like Arizona is another state that needs a Manchin type Democrat, so that is sure to cause some issues with voting on certain liberal policies with pure lefties.

I look at it all as a transition in American politics. The right has gone so far right it has opened up a huge middle that even politicians called Democrats can fill if they are somewhat conservative. Maybe in time that transition can lead to more and more pure liberal policies. Or, it will lead to another party that will replace Republicans just by need.

LOL. A Tesla Model 3 driver was disqualified and removed from the podium at Global Attack over some sniveling bullshit:

Rogers managed a 2:00.78 time, which was good enough for second-in-class, and the car actually got the best time with a 1:59.12 when driven by Sasha Anis from Mountain Pass Performance - though he wasn’t officially competing with the car.

Nonetheless, Rogers made the podium with the Model 3 Performance, but his time was contested by a defeated competitor because and I quote: “electricity is not listed as an approved fuel.”

I’d honestly be shocked if it was high as 60%. But yes you do have to be fairly conservative to win state wide in Arizona. We need a set of principles that sets us apart from Republicans obviously but we need to understand what gets someone elected here in VA or your state or Arizona is totally different. And I wouldn’t call Sinema a DINO in any case given that she strongly supports LGBT rights, is pro choice, pro gun control. She rubbed me the wrong way big time with her agreement with Trump sending troops to the border but she’s a moderate Dem not a DINO. And I’m tired of progressives acting like it’s all black and white especially as they ignore the less than progressive stances that those they like i.e. Bernie’s record on immigration and guns which are awful and shitting on other people.

If this revelation is true, I would love to hear the excuses the right will come up to forgive Dear Leader…..

You’re talking about women that have abortions and men that force the women they had unprotected sex with to have abortions…while insisting it’s the worst thing possible except when they need it.

I mean, this is the bottom of “evangelical”—they have no Good News—“conservative”—they make up new traditions as needed—“Christianity”…they’re saved, and are moral because they said the magic words, and when they do something against their own code they have a separate magic ritual that grants them forgiveness (and its capital-W wrong to hold their misdeeds against them).

They’ve already field tested their excuse for anything Trump did wrong or will do wrong. He’s a unrighteous man designated by God to give the righteous what they deserve.

Also, if it’s true they’ll just blame those whores. They have a lot of practice displacing the sexual misdeeds of powerful men onto women. And girls. And less powerful men. And boys. And the corrupting influence of society.

I’ll have a big-ass bag of whatever it is they’re smoking.

Stan Collender: “The new reality is that, with a Democrat-controlled House next year, it may make more political sense for Trump to keep the wall issue alive through the next Congress — especially if he’ll be able to blame House Democrats for it not being funded — than to get his funding now.”

trump builds wall!!! great for trump
trump doesnt build wall!!! great for trump

I dunno: it’s a sad commentary on our politics and society, but I think the latter analysis is fairly spot-on. Stoking up racist/xenophobic prejudices (usually figleafed by faux-concern about “illegality”) is about the last popular policy Trump and the GOP have to run on. And disgracefully, it IS a lot more popular than we’d like to think.

Just because Trump/GOP’s “Scary Caravan” whoopteedoo didn’t have the effect on the midterms they had hoped, doesn’t mean (IMO) that they are going to abandon their “nationalistic” (i.e. racist/xenophobic) appeals to their red-hat “base”. And “The Wall” is, as it’s been since the beginning, an integral part of the appeal.

Remember: this is the Administration who are thought to have specifically coordinated with “victims groups” to identify and exploit crimes done by “illegal aliens” - the bloodier the better - so that the *President of the United States* can go up in front of crowds and publicly cite them as “justification” for his anti-immigration policies.

A quick Googling brought up these figures: (though they’re from 2013): and are expressed in tons of wine produced annually.

1 Italy 4,796,600
2 Spain 4,607,850
3 France 4,293,466
4 United States 3,300,000
5 China 1,700,000
6 Argentina 1,498,380
7 Chile 1,214,000
8 Australia 1,186,343
9 South Africa 1,146,006
10 Germany 920,200

So the three top producers (all in the EU) produce more wine annually than the next 17 countries in the top 20 (and E&J Gallo is said to provide a quarter of total US production - i.e. more than all of Portugal) - and Trump thinks that he can somehow boost US exports - to France - via tariff trickery?

ADD: I was quite surprised to see China on this list (everyone else I know about) - not that they would get into wine production (like they do with everything else) - I just wonder what Chinese wine might taste like?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Chinese wine in a store.

I wonder if they’re producing wine that’s then used to mix and create bottled products.

In my area there’s a rash of vineyards (because it’s way of taking a little rural land and turning it into a picturesque locale) and they all send off what they press to be blended into something palatable. Now I’m wondering where the people they hire to do the blending get all their different wines to work with.

For some time?

Since the fucking Romans, I live on the Middle Rhine and they have been cultivating the slopes here for 2,000 years.

The industry suffered from a bad image as they were overproducing and selling cheap crappy wines for export (remember Blue Nun, Liebrauenmilch, Black Tower or Schwarze Katze? All crappy wine made up of grapes that nobody could get rid of)

The industry has started stressing quality over quantity lately and doing just fine, especially now that climate change allows them to grow varieties of grapes (pinot, sylvaner, etc.) that never thrived here before.

Brutal.

His politics, to the extent that they’ve ever been legible, have always been off-the-rack big city tabloid bullshit—crudely racist exterminate the brutes/back the blue authoritarianism in the background and ruthless petty rich person squabbling in the front. His actions since becoming president have been those of a dim, cruel child playacting at being a powerful man—giving orders without quite knowing what they mean or how they might be carried out, taunting enemies, beating up the people he can afford to beat up without having to be called to account for it, lying as needed or just for yuks. He hasn’t changed a thing since graduating from punchline to president. It’s been clear for decades that Trump was both an asshole and a dummy; this is now a problem not just for the odd unlucky cocktail waitress and his staff of cheesy apparatchiks but for literally every person on earth.

I’d also be shocked if it’s that high. But even if it is, what matters most is what issues she broke with the party on.

It’s not even security theater.

It’s wholesale screwing with people legitimately entering the US to go to their jobs, vacation here, etc., all because Trump, Miller, and the GOP base can’t stand nonwhites entering the US.

This is flat out racist bulkshit masquerading as security policy, when it does the opposite.

It’ll undermine the SoCal economy as people aren’t able to get to their jobs, cross-border trade drops, and millions are inconvenienced because Trump thinks this is a good idea.

Unsurprising, assuming the climate and terroir of Upstate NY are remotely similar to Georgia: Georgian wines have been cultivated since forever: reputedly, their brandies were especially treasured in pre-Revolutionary Russia: being considered the equivalent of the best French cognacs.

I’d honestly be shocked if it was high as 60%. But yes you do have to be fairly conservative to win state wide in Arizona.

A bit of this article that backs up the 60% figure. I had to Google this, as I had heard the 60% yesterday on local TV news. The article is from ABC News and is from November 17th.

Meet Kyrsten Sinema, the Democrat who was just elected Arizona’s first female senator

Sinema’s record also shows that she votes with Republicans more often than most Democrats currently in Congress. According to 538’s congressional tracker which evaluates how often members of Congress vote with the Trump administration, she has the fourth-highest record of any Democrat, and the highest percentage of any Democrat in Arizona.

Sinema voted with the Trump administration 62 percent of the time according to 538, which while high for a Democrat, is predictably lower than her Republican opponent McSally, who voted with the administration 98 percent of the time.

“When the president is doing something right, support him,” explained Sinema during an Oct. 15 debate. “When he’s doing something wrong, oppose it.”

Sorghum would result in a distilled spirit, not wine AFAIK. Even what’s known as sorghum wine is actually a distilled spirit.

Germany has a wine culture going back centuries; Riesling and Gewurztraminer, among the top varietals. Rhine/Rhone valley wines are often exceptional.

I’m a German wine girl, myself. All of ‘em.
